With snow melting and some recent milder weather, winter cereals will be starting to wake up. Winter wheat breaks dormancy when it has had seven consecutive days of positive growing degree day accumulations (GDD) using a base temperature of 0C. To check GDD accumulations from a weather station near you, check out Perennia’s Farm Data Tools GDD Calculator (www.farmdatatools.perennia.ca/). Once dormancy has broken, you can assess the stand for winter survival and tiller counts, which can help inform your nitrogen fertility strategy going forward. There was delayed emergence in some fields last fall due to lack of moisture for germination, so the plants may have had slightly less time to get established and tiller in the fall, even if it was planted on time. Nitrogen at green-up will help to boost spring tillering while a second application at GS32 will help to support growth through stem elongation. ... See MoreSee Less
