The Board of the Sheep Producers Association of Nova Scotia proudly names an annual “Producer of the Year” award. This was started in 2015. The objective of the award is to annually recognize a Nova Scotia sheep producer for the outstanding contributions they make to the provincial sheep industry.
The recipient of the SPANS Producer of the Year Award should have demonstrated excellence in at least one of the following categories:
- Farm Management (i.e. Flock Health, Production Efficiency, Genetic Improvement, Financial Viability)
- Innovation and Special Practices (i.e. Innovative Techniques, Marketing Initiatives)
- Environmental Stewardship (i.e. Sustainable Land Use, Environmental Responsibility)
- Industry & Community Leadership (i.e. Industry Involvement and Promotion, Youth Support)
- Farm Appearance & Professionalism (i.e. Farm Appearance, Industry Leader in BRM)
Nomination Procedure:
- Both the Nominator and Recipient must be in good standing with SPANS.
- Nominations are accepted year-round.
- Nominations are retained for 3 years.
- Nominator must provide enough detail in their summary to ensure criteria is met, pictures are encouraged.
Selection Procedure:
- If more than two nominations are received, an ad hoc committee of the board, consisting of at least three board members, will be struck to narrow down the selection for the current year.
- Final decision between two candidates will be conducted by the board at the September board meeting.
